A type of equipment that is specifically utilized to load and unload heavy, huge freight containers is referred to as a container forklift. They are used to shuttle freight off and on ships, truck beds and trains. Container forklifts are the largest and most sturdy kinds of forklifts manufactured. They need to be extremely maneuverable on terrain that is uneven and have sufficient power and torque to safely raise large containers. They normally have heavy-duty diesel engines and large pneumatic tires.
Like all types of forklifts, a container forklift uses forks in order to raise the containers. Forks must be positioned to make sure the load is secure during transport. Several container forklift models are only designed to lift the containers several meters off the ground. Other container handlers utilize another technique for carrying containers to greater heights. A container handler utilizes a device affixed to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machine is counterbalanced with weights to maintain stability.
Carrying and transporting containers is the main purpose of a container forklift. Regular forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated based on the maximum weight they could handle. The forklift's capabilities must never be exceeded and should be posted prominently in the cockpit.
