Duties of a Forklift Driver

Forklift drivers are working in warehouses and factories to be able to transport materials from one place to another. Drivers need specialized training, that is usually offered by the workplace. Potential operators should pass both a drug test and a background check.

Daily Inspections

A forklift operator's responsibilities consist of performing daily safety and functionality checks. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration mandates that all forklifts be inspected prior to using them. The driver must inspect the forklift once more after the shift. Yearly safety training is an essential part of the job description of a forklift driver.

Loading and Unloading

Forklift operators use controls on the forklift to unload and load supplies and to be able to stack stuff effectively and in a timely method.

Weighing Materials

As part of the various tasks, the forklift driver must both weigh and log the weights of the supplies they must transport.

Quality Control

One more important part of a forklift driver's responsibility is quality control. This includes making certain that orders are right and making certain the supplies do not sustain damage during the moving process.

Battery Maintenance and Care

Caring for the forklift battery helps ensure a long life span for the unit. Proper care and maintenance comprise inspecting the water level within the forklift battery around every five charge cycles, filling the cell to just over the visible protector, being careful not to overflow the water, and cleaning up any spills. Once a forklift battery is charging, never disrupt the cycle.

PPE: Personal Protective Equipment

When performing works on the battery, such as inspecting the level of water, Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is required. Both hand protection and eye protection must be worn, and a fire extinguisher and acid spill kit must be available. Forklift drivers should always observe safety rules. The charging place should be kept ventilated and clear of open flame.
