Lift Truck Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to power electric lift trucks must be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station should not be obstructed and an injured worker must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When in the vicinity of a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Never permit objects like matches or lighters to be used while someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place well ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
